Condors at the Oregon Zoo and Beyond

Salem Public Library's Loucks Auditorium

Shawn St. Michael discusses what brought the California Condor to the brink of extinction, what is being done to bring them back, and the hurdles they face in reintroduction and recovery.  St. Michael is the assistant curator of birds and condors at the Oregon Zoo – host to one of the four California Condor breeding facilities in the world.

WATERSHEDS 101

“We all live in a watershed.”  This class will explain what watersheds are, why they are important, and how all of us impact them.  Class members also will learn how to determine the impacts on local creeks using chemical, biological, and physical assessment methods.  Class members will measure key chemical and biological markers of nearby streams during a field trip.  Deborah Topp is Natural Resource Outreach Specialist for the City of Salem.  Alan Pennington is a Dayton teacher and former environmental specialist with the City of Salem.

INTRODUCTION TO NATURE JOURNALING

Using art and narrative to record observations and feelings in a nature journal can be a powerful way to learn about the world around you.  This class provides a how-to introduction to writing, sketching, and painting observations and experiences in the natural world.  Marilyn Karbonski has taught and lectured on field journals for 17 years.

OREGON’S  NATIVE CONIFERS

Oregon is home to nearly 30 native conifers.  Class members will learn about their distribution and status, and how to identify them.  Wilbur Bluhm is Professor Emeritus of the Oregon State Universe Extension Service and a horticulture and native plant expert.

The Perils of Pesticides: 

Community Efforts to Reduce Pesticide Use and Create Healthy Yards

Sue Koger will discuss the health risks of pesticides, particularly for children, and local efforts to reduce pesticide use in Salem. Liz Francis will teach how to design a healthy yard that meets your family’s needs.

The Truth of the Barnacles:  Imagine a New Environmental Ethic

“Can we find a way to live in our habitats without wrecking them?” Rachel Carson asked.  With stories, readings, and occasional dives into philosophical waters and tide pools, Kathleen Dean Moore explores a new environmental ethic for our time.  Moore is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Oregon State University, author of award winning books about our connections to nature – Riverwalking, Holdfast, and the Pine Island Paradox – and winner of the Oregon Book Award for Creative Nonfiction.
